this sounds like a lot of fun. my biggest hope is to see something original!
a local theater here is participating (though not the artsy-fartsy one i would have expected).
i have to work some this weekend but i expect to spend a lot of time at the movies.
check out the web site.

Btw...One can look up the fest on Wikipedia

My family and I have our own Horror movie fest. Each year we bring horror movies to watch. We take the TV outside and watch movies in the dark and the mist. I heard about the Horrorfest before. Named "8 Films to Die for" I check out what previous movies played in 2006. I read each film and decided between 2 movies. 'Dark Ride' (My cousin works at a park) and 'Wicked Little Things' (we live in Pennsylvania). I picked Dark Ride between the 2. Netflix has all these movies fromt he fest. They even have the "8 Films to Die For" collection in the disc. Before the film they show the Horrorfest preview. Then she show the 7 other trailers for the films. Then the movie started. After and hour and a half of gore, breasts, killer Blow Jobs, and B movie acting with only 2 actors I kno well, It ended. I think I was told never to pick a movie from that fest again. Thats what they think. Next year I will try to pick better. The tralier to 'Gravedancers' did look good though.

i had a pretty good time at last year's offerings and i'm hoping a nearby theater picks them up.
did anybody else go last year? planning to go this year?

I'm not as interested this year as I was last year. I like horror films like Planet Terror, which was what last year's looked like, but I fear that this year's bunch will be closer to the torture-porn type that I hate like Hostel: Part II.

I take it that's a "No".

Rinne
Directed by Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On, Grudge etc) so I'd expect it be be decent enough. I'm guessing this will become reasonably widely available.

Gravedancers
Never heard of Josie Maran. Have now.

Dark Ride

Wicked Little Things

These all score around 5.5 - 6.5 which is common for decent horrors. E.g., Ju-On: The Grudge only gets 6.5 and I regard it as excellent. Looking forward to perhaps seeing some of these, although I'm not sure any will make it to the cinema in NZ.

i caught 4 of the Horrorfest films. meant to see a lot more but here's my take on the ones i saw:

"Reincarnation" (original Japanese title Rinne) - the best of the four i saw. spooky and grotesque. slow pacing by American standards. had some of the staples of J-horror: pale faces peering from the darkness, pale hands touching people and then disappearing, a creepy little girl. if you've seen Ju-On or Ringu or One Missed Call you know what i mean. however i think Rinne was better than those. reminded me of "The Shining" a little. it also used a horror bit that i'm really getting tired of - a driver runs over somebody who appears out of nowhere, gets out to check and they're gone.

"The Gravedancers" - good try. awful dialogue and cheap-looking special effects. it had an interesting idea and some genuinely scary moments, but too many unintentional laughs. when was the last time you saw an adult hold up their middle three fingers and tell somebody, "Read between the lines"? the ghosts looked like Iron Maiden's Eddie. featured cute-as-hell Josie Maran.

2 fwiffs

"Dark Ride" - pretty much follows the classic Michael Myers formula. most of the film takes place inside one of those scary rides at the state fair so it had a lot of creepy images. kept me always suspicious of any of the figures. featured one of the most original decapitation scenes i've ever seen. pretty good but not terribly original.

3 fwiffs

"Wicked Little Things" - kind of like one of Romero's "Dead" movies, set in an old mining town. had the best acting performances of the Horrorfest films i saw. had some brutal kill scenes and really gross images. also featured the disappearing-vehicular-assault-victim.

did anybody else see any of the Horrorfest films?

Curious to hear what these are like. Could it be a dumping ground for B-grade rubbish? Or is it a testing ground to find stuff suitable (and good enough) for general release?

Let us know how it went.
