I have been trying to pair "stars" of today that may equal the stars of yesterday (there is some overlap (not all the stars of yesterday are dead yet�just older), so be aware  ). I am satisfied with most of my selections�others, not so satisfied, so maybe you would enjoy submitting your selections.

I'm not so sure. She did okay both in The Good Girl and Rumor Has It, as well as carrying off the more serious role in Derailed very nicely. I also have to say that her guest appearance in "Dirt" was amazingly well done - she pulled off snake in the grass bitchy far better than I thought she was capable of. She isn't that bad, but you are right, she's no new Shirley MacLaine.
The best match I can come up for to MacLaine might be Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Only problem there is she's never done any drama to speak of and we really don't know if she has MacLaine's talent in that area - but comically, they're a good match.
And as for Colin Firth doing Caine's part in Gambit, that might just be a good match for Caine as well. They both are brooders when doing serious roles and both do comedy with awkward bumbling, even though both can be more suave in certain comic parts. Yes, I'd say that works nicely.

I originally had Jude Law paired with Michael Caine, but I think Jude is not nearly the actor Caine is, although, it is still fairly early in his career. Colin Firth is reprising Caine's role in a remake of "Gambit." Sadly, it is rumoured Jennifer Aniston is slated for the Shirley MacLaine part. I am not a fan of her acting or lack thereof. She did well enough in the ensemble TV sitcom "Friends," but none of them can really carry a film or sitcom separately. |

Apologies if I somewhat overstated myself Stalean but I was just so incredulous about some of the pairings. This is why it would make such a good pub game with plenty of room for debate and people being, shall we say, enthusiastic about their personal favorites or indeed personal bugbears.
I've always thought that Jimmy Stewart was one of the greats and no one today comes even close. However, thinking about Chocky's post, I'm inclined to agree and go with Tom Hanks. He's one of the few actors who can carry comedy and a certain whimsy, as well as dramatic and even darker charactorisations.
Sellers = Rush; definately not. I can't say I can think of a good matching but Peter Sellers was a comic charactor actor. Some love his performance in 'Being There' and cite it for his straight acting credentials, but it's not one of my favs and his understated performance, though good, is overated, for me. Rush is a good actor who can also do comedy. That's a very different animal.
Agree with Benj on the James Dean = River Phoenix which seems a sadly apposite pairing
I thought of the Victor Mature = Sly Stallone pairing pretty much based on their physique and the way their films use it. Mature was always a beefcake and was the first to admit his own shortcomings as an actor, although when cast in the right role, could turn in a good performance. Stallone's similar, relying on physical roles that feature his impresive sculpted body and keep dialogue to a minimum. But then a film like Copland show he can act.
Shirley Temple = Abigail Breslin
Drew Barrymore = Dakota Fanning
Yeah, I can see both of those working but as they're so young and so recent, that could change completely over the next 3 or 4 years
Trying to think about Michael Caine, Jude Law may be a better match as he seems intent on reprising his classic roles. Talking of which, Sir Lawrence Olivier = Kenneth Branagh is an absolute slam-dunk. He's practically a reincarnation

Hm... that wouldn't be my choice for Kate. I'd say, more likely Charlize Theron in the looks department, but if we look closer to acting style, Anjelica Huston would probably be a better match.

Oh, no... never Jack with Spence... I'd go with Clive Owen, despite the disparities in their looks, I think Owen has a hidden comedic ability that we've rarely seend and he could easily bring out, if he'd stop paying attention to what Hollywood is trying to hype him as.

I find it totally amusing that Christian Bale is bothering you guys so much. I looked at the beginning of Jimmy Stewart's career and compared it to Christian's, and Bale came out on top. I remember the first time that I saw "After the Thin Man" with Stewart playing a psychopathic killer--good stuff, and all the better to compare with Bale's performance in "American Psycho."
Anyway, at the rate Bale is going, he should only be getting better and better roles. He has taken the Batman series to much better places than where the old ones were headed. He needs a comedic role (his debut was opposite Rowan Atkinson) to help round out his portfolio. His turn in the western "3:10 to Yuma" was great (as was Russell Crowe's). And, if I can remember his role as "Boy" in "Henry V" even before I knew that was him (not to mention "Empire of the Sun" before that), then, in my book, that says something for his acting ability. If he can steer clear of bad films like "Reign of Fire," then he will become a great star like James Stewart. |

Who's to say which is better, but I can see the match-up you have chosen for River Phoenix.
I originally had George Clooney down for Gary Cooper at one point, but I just can't seem to find the right actor for one of my favorite actors. |

Yeah, seeing as how Geoffrey Rush played Peter Sellers in a cable film and his comedic roles that I have seen.
Yeah, Leonardo DiCaprio is a great actor. I think, by the end of his career, he will have amassed as many accolades as either of those actors.
Will Ferrell is debatable, but I did say that I wasn't happy with some of my selections. I just don't see any of the other comedic actors fitting Walter Matthau's shoes either, not even the one I had in place before him--Jim Carrey.
