Posted - 02/08/2008 : 19:09:06 I have to admit, I cried when I heard about this death. It was so sudden, and so unexpected. Publicly, we have all seen the train wrecks as they are occurring. Anna Nicole Smith, Brad Renfro, Britney Spears. God knows they receive enough sarcasm and cheap wit. I'm guilty of it as well. The problem with this is that while the public is ready for the quick laugh, few have seemed to recognize that, yes, to be obvious and repetitive, this is a cry for help. Those overt examples are out there and too often, no one reads the sign. Some don't get the help. Some are helped to the wreck. Hopefully, what is going on with Britney is getting her the help she needs.
What I find so terribly sad about this death is that there were a very few signs out there - Ledger was having some problems. I'm so relieved to find out his death was accidental, both for his family and for his memory. He talked about his inability to sleep not long before this happened, he'd had a year which would score fairly high on the stressors checklist and he was young enough, and still functioning well enough, that it wasn't noticed. His relationship had ended, he wasn't with his daughter, he was living alone and well away from the rest of his family, a character was haunting him and he couldn't sleep. The situation was prominent enough for him to mention it in an interview for a film, although not pervasive enough to prohibit him from functioning. A strong sign of clinical depression that, Ledger being 28 and otherwise successful, was overlooked by the doctors he saw.
I dealt with my aunt and her developing Alzheimer's. She would take her medication and fall asleep, only to wake an hour or two later and not remember she'd taken her pills and take them again. We finally had to intervene. Who hasn't had sleepless nights and that encroaching anxiety for the need to sleep? Two hours a night is not restorative sleep, physically or mentally. Desperately wanting to sleep, but not being able to, looking for relief: "I took that pill and it didn't help, I'll take this one and maybe then I'll finally sleep."
And so he passed, taking with him such a future, such promise, that the world was effected. Daniel Day Lewis said it best and with such eloquence that no other tributes seemed necessary.

I'm not familiar with this guy--he appears to be the Dr. Phil of rehab so I wouldn't give him much cred--but towards the end of the article he claims that Ledger's substance abuse was well known "in Hollywood". |

Thanks. It certainly makes one feel that he felt he had something to live for, and that makes his death all that more sad.

Was very disturbed by this news, as my roomie told me about it yesterday... Hate to see young talent wasted in such a manner.
Was in the pub after work today, having 2-3 pints, when a well-respected patron uttered the words...
"That's what you get when you make a FAG film..."
I almost puked... Still dunno if he was joking, but there seemed to be some truth in his voice!
On one of the Israeli on-line papers, some ultra-orthodox person said much the same thing, and the reaction he got was a tirade of people replying with things like "If you're so religious, how do you even know about that film? You should be studying scriptures and keeping your homophobic little mind out of movies altogether." Serves the idiot right! A**hole!

Posted - 01/24/2008 : 00:43:48 All early deaths are terrible, but this one, like all the young talents who go too soon, seems inexplicable. Very sad. |

Many of you know me to be crass and controversial in Fourum, but I skipped a breath when I heard the news.
I've posted one review with relevancy, but that will be all... R.I.P. Heath.
My post for 'Dark Knight'... 'Ledger's last laugh...' (tho, I know there will be many more apropos posts, pre-mine...) |

Posted - 01/23/2008 : 08:00:44 I am utterly shocked! Anyone who read my 'Meet the Joker' thread, will know that I had such great expectations for this guy. I can only hope that his performance in Dark Knight can give us a glimpse into his potential. Such a shame. |

Posted - 01/23/2008 : 07:21:28 Why am I thinking about James Dean after this? Such talent, such a shame. I have added a new accolade to honour his memory.
Brother, this is grimm.
This Knight, truly Dark!
