End of long Odyssey

I don't feel particularly sad about ACC's death. After all, he was 90, had said goodbye to his fans on his 90th birthday, and had (so far as I know) a happy and healthy life. I'm here for the booze and hot cross buns.

The loss of Anthony Minghella saddens me much more. He was little more than half of ACC's age and had much more to do.

I can't think of anything funny to write, but this man was an inspiration to the world. 2001: A Space Odyssey (both the film and the book) are masterpieces of science fiction. Clarke thought like a scientist and wrote with respect for his audience and to the universe. He will be missed.

I am terribly saddened by his passing. Here are some initial thoughts, on which I shall expand this afternoon.

About 15 years ago, when I was "editing" a new Clarke collaborative novel at his US publisher, we would send each other "e-mail" messages overnight: I had installed my AOL software on the lone computer that had a dialup line at work, and he'd revealed his own address. I would ask Sir Arthur a question, go home, go to bed, then come to work the next day and find the answer had arrived all the way from Sri Lanka! Both of us marveled at the speed of the communication, and I could see that the world was shrinking before my eyes.

I moved to another publisher about 2 years later, and became that company's first employee to include his email address on his business card. Salud, Sir Arthur!

Diver peeks ahead, ascends.
