Thanks, CL and benj!

BTW, benj, you do realize that god will now smite you in ways you can only begin to imagine. And you'll prob'ly be forced to take up smoking.

Nice piece

I have to say I found an odd balance in the film. It did seem largely to say religeon is stupid, inconsistent and causes mostly harm (which I'd tend to agree with) but then in the midst of it all Maher effectively says belief in God saved him from smoking, which partly undermines his point. (Or was this a subtle joke given he then interviews the cannabis religeon guy whilst smoking?)

On another note... largely thanks to the likes of Richard Dawkins, Aethiests are definitely starting to get their act together. Along with the bus campaign you mentioned, there was a massive show I went to just before Christmas (http://skeptic.org.uk/news/2008/1219) that sold out so quick it had to be extended to 3 nights. Contrary to what some might think, this was not chock full of goths, devil-worshippers and sexual deviants, but actually intelligent, rational thinking, average members of the public (plus me).

Another excellent piece of writing, Bafta! This movie has been both blasted and blessed, but I think you hit the nail on the head with its true message.
