This Korean film keeps popping up on reviews and gets variable write ups. One said it was MORE violent than "Old Boy"!!! Another said it was a classic of its type.

Anyone seen it and can recommend it?

I wouldn't put it in the same "perversely existential" theme bin as Oldboy.

For me it's more a black-humorish-Memories-of-Murder companion.
The good thing with The Chaser that no one mentioned is that is trying to avoid clichees at all costs (of weirdness) possible.

I would also recommend Nowhere to Hide for the Korean movie theme night. It's great, trailer misleads a bit though.

Damn good, and very nasty. It has that typical Korean blend of serious violence exacerbated by night, rain, mud and death.

8/10

First impressions - Hollywood will remake it and it won't be as intense.

A corrupt Korean Ex-Detective is now a small time pimp. His girls start to go missing and the Police aren't interested. As depicted here , the Korean Police would hve problems tying their own shoelaces! The flatfoots are clueless and brainless, the Detectives use 50's style strong-arm stuff on suspects and the Brass are weak willed or martinets. So the "hero" sets out to solve the puzzle among the labyrinthine streets and hills of Seoul and realises he is working against the clock.

At once a "Woman in Peril" mystery , a noir , a story of redemption and a scathing attack on police incompetence, " The Chaser" has plenty to keep the audience in suspense. There are one or two very violent moments but these are rationed out and are consequently more shocking. The fight scenes are brutal in the "Old Boy" tradition.

There is a small child involved and the film manages to depict her realistically without any overt sentimentality. She is the one thread of decency and innocence in a corrupt world.

Anyway , cant say too much more without getting into spoilers. Worth a watch

As an oddity , the actor playing the pimps friend on the force is a Korean version of Donnie Wahlberg - it's uncanny!

I saw it yesterday, but I cannot recommend it as I kept falling asleep and thus couldn't follow it. It didn't seem any more violent than I expected.
