Carntunggle - A card game popular in Iowa in the 19th Century . It was a development of fizbin insofar as three fours and a three made the winning hand. Many an Iowa farmer regretted getting involved in a "sporting" game of Carntuggle and ended up "tunggled". Large gangs of Sharpies from out of state would descend on innocent communities and "tunggle" them into destitution.
Governor Mace Yardarm ( 1897-1905 ) banned Carntunggle in 1903 and the Tunggle Gangs disbanded.
Mauchalating Ah, we can trace this word back to the late 9th century when its spelling became corrupted from Maunchulate. This was the antonym of Paunchalate, meaning to acquire a large belly from excess quaffing of mead or stout. Thus 'to maunchalate' meant to lose said belly by giving up such alcoholic beverages. Fasionable society fops regaled the court with their svelte new Maunch, and a fashion revolution ensued involving tights. Etymologists believe the 'n' was dropped to better elide the syllables. Mauchalation Parlours were established at fashionable spa towns throughout Europe, and the aristocracy spoke of 'going mauchalating,' or going on a diet.
