Moonlighting is my favorite sitcom. The writing was amazing (and the scripts were twice as thick as most, due to the overlapping dialogues between David Addison and Maddie Hayes!), the cast was phenomenal, and it had some of the most memorable single episodes ever! The black-and-white episode, introduced by Orson Welles in one of his last TV appearances, the all-iambic-pentameter "Atomic Shakespeare" episode, the episode in which Dave and Maddie are reduced to Claymation witch and frog in a dream sequence . . . the list goes on.
An original series in an endless sea of mediocrity . . . |

I liked it too, but not sure I'd classify it as a sitcom - it was really a forerunner of the dram-com. One hour comedic shows built in the format of a drama. (no laugh track, no live audience, variable sets and locations, etc.) |

I'm in with Barney Miller, a gentle, wry, marvelously well written gem that started on TV in 1975.
Ron Glass played the sophisticated and cultured Det. Ron Harris, who was also an aspiring novelist. (Eventually, his book 'Precinct Diary' was published under the title 'Blood On The Badge.' He was sued by a shyster lawyer who got the court to agree that all of the characters in the book were real people who were used w/o their permission. Harris had to give up all money earned from the book.)
Max Gail played Stan 'Wojo' Wojciehowicz, the slightly dumb but good-hearted detective who was an average sort of regular guy.
Harris complained about the difficulty of maintaining 'the good life' on his detective's salary. Wojo said he couldn't see that it should be so expensive to just go bowling, have a few beers, etc. Harris said, "That's not the good life! That's gusto!"
Then there was the time that the police dept granted the precinct a little money with which to make a porn film to use in a sting operation. Harris was granted role of director and he threw himself into it with vigor, seeing himself as a Hitchcock. Most fo the film was really boring, while Harris set up the situation...we are not shown the final scene, but apparently it redeemed Harris as a porn director.
There was humorous verbal sparring between Harris and Steve Landesberg's Det. Arthur Dietrich. Both officers were brilliant, but Dietrich was a bit of a social misfit and something of a genius, which annoyed Harris.
Don't forget Abe Vigoda as Fish. He was priceless. And to date, the rumors of his death are greatly exaggerated. |

I agree with Turrell here 100%. I loved "Moonlighting", and I'm thinking that shows like "Gilmore Girls" has a lot to thank "Moonlighting" for. |

Yeah, but for the purposes of this contest Moonlighting seems plenty close enough.
You can always not vote for it if you don't like it, no? |

I think that any avatar qualifies and its up to voters to interpret how well i fits and/or stands on its own. I only mentioned it because I think sitcom somewhat tarnishes how brilliant a show moonlighting was. I particularly liked how there was always a madcap chase towards the end of the show and David and Maddy would end up upside down and interlocked and David would look into the camera and say if I could only get her like this when we had more time - or something similiar.
Going outside the 4th wall and speaking to the camera was pretty original at the time. |

Since Seinfeld has been taken twice, I thought I would give my recommendation to my other favorite sitcom. Now before Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, there was a programme called Spaced. This is so funny, dripping with pop cultures, cultural references and pretty hillarious. All those who like the Shaun or the Fuzz, then please please watch Spaced.

I chose an image of Hyacinth Bucket from one of my favorite sit-coms, "Keeping Up Appearances," in which she answers her telephone with her trademark, "The Bouquet residence! The lady of the house speaking!"
Sorry Randall. |

That's cool. I just peeked in, saw the theme, and ran right out and got a "Moonlighting" pic. Not necessarily for the competition, just the inspiration. I'll leave it for a while, then put one o' my old ones back. Don't worry about the votin'. I see what you're saying about not qualifyin', so let's just say I sit comfortably disqualified.
No offense intended, none taken. |

Don't let that big avatar thug Turrell run you off, RP! We're more about art and expression in here than rules.
Now don't forget to vote by Wed. afternoon or we'll have your left hand lopped off. |

I told Lamont (that big dummy!) to drop off my votes on the way back from the store. He's supposed to get champagne and some Ripple, so I can make my favorite drink: Champipple. |
