I've just finished watching Running With Scissors, a pretty bleak film, about depression and dysfunctional families. Although you would never know that from watching this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=er5S-7H5g4o

It's like the studio didn't know how to sell the movie, so they took all the funny bits and presented it as a quirky comedy.

I guess, I was just wondering if anyone else can remember being misled by a trailer to a film they have seen?

The Village. I suppose they were damned however they advertised it, as if they were honest it would have been the mother-of-all spoilers. Fortunately I didn't mind, as I liked it anyway.

Edit: I started a thread on a similar topic a while ago here. Not much interest in it then.

It's not out yet, but I think this trailer for 'Funny Games' will fall squarely into this category:

Primeval, which was presented as a movie about a serial murderer, when it's really just a bunch of hunters chasing after a big crocodile. I wrote a FWFR about it.

I get mislead into seeing a film by its trailer on a regular basis.

For the purposes of this discussion, are we including all the crappy movies that had trailers which mislead us into thinking they wouldn't suck?

I saw the trailer for Sweeney Todd before American Gangster came on. After, I said to my wife in a stage whisper, "You'd never guess it's a musical".

I'll bet half the people who overheard me thought I was joking. But it's true - there was one scene of Johnny Depp singing, but it was of him standing in the street advertising his barber services. No orchestration or anything to indicate that music would be significant.

I assume you've all seen the trailer for Shining.

I'd say the trailer for Southland Tales makes it look like the movie's threads maybe (just maybe) cohere, but they don't. The movie doesn't make a lick of sense. It doesn't even make 0.00000006 licks of sense.

Not exactly a complaint, mind.

Just remembered another one (The Prestige), though it's kinda spoilery:

The trailer made it look like it was about majick (i.e., real magic) rather than sci-fi.

Hilarious. Of course, that one's a joke.
