That doesn't make any sense. Murder victims are no more to blame just because the murderer warned them.
It makes as much sense as ranking putting a space after a slash up there with murder.
A much more reasonable analogy would be for you to say "If you wrote 'Caution: contents very hot' on the side of a Hot Apple Pie and I went and burnt myself could I not sue you for burning myself?" to which the answer is, of course, a loud, resounding No. |

If it was their ball you'd play how they wanted to play and if you didn't like it, you could go home. And sometimes, if you annoyed everyone else, they'd strip you, tie you to the goalposts and take turns wellying the ball at you. |

It's not such a bad analogy as slashes are involved in both situations.

There is a 'No Smoking' Sign on my door before you enter my house. Just the other day I burned a pie in my oven. I can't beleive it started to smoke. I went to a resturant and asked for the "No smoking" section. I still smelled smoke from the tables just a few feet away. There is always exceptions to the rules. Whats my point???
I now need a sign on my door that reads "No Murderers allowed" seeing that there is nothing that keeps them from coming in. |

Jesus, am I glad I'm not mired in this boring, pedantic, unnecessary thread. benj can translate every review into Swahili if he likes. Get over it! Oops: as Groo the Wanderer used to say, "did I err?" |

Well, you'd probably play 'Headers & Volleys' or 'Three and In', and these all have different rules in different regions. So, yes, you'd play house rules, much as you do when playing pool in different pubs. Or cricket: six and out or one-hand-one-bounce. Or golf when you play mulligans. Or darts when you give someone a headstart. In almosy anything where the idea is just to have a bit of fun really.
But it would be a collective decision which version to play - in the pub, it would have been established by the regular clientele, not dictated by the landlord. At a person's house, one would not expect them to have more say than any other participant, surely.
Anyone that comes into my house and doesn't play by my house rules is not welcome. No ifs or buts, you're out. |

So if my pet penguin takes a dump on your doormat, then you're saying you have the right to stop me bringing him inside? How rude! |

I disagree. If I invite people over to my house to play football, I'd change whatever rules I felt like changing. E.g., I'd drop that stupid rule that encourages grown men to attempt to help their team by falling over in front of the goal and crying like girls, so I'd allow full body contact. And allow shoulder charging etc. And allow people to pick up the ball and run with it. And increase the difficulty/excitement by making the ball oval shaped. Etc. |

I'll never forget my first live football match, a few years ago in Lisbon. [It was Benfica at home.] When the first diver went down, I was mortified at the catcalls -- absolutely scandalized that people were whistling derisively at what I took to be a poor injured guy. My hosts just said, "You don't know much about football, do you, [Randall]?" and then patiently explained.
EDIT: PROUD TO BE OFF TOPIC!!!!! |

How is a slash not grammar? Isn't grammar the total sum of punctuation and spelling and all parts of speech and writing? |

I reiterate, this is not up for debate.
You are welcome to choose not to debate back, but I am taking for granted that freedom of speech is still allowed within the Fourum. Perhaps I am mistaken.
quote: You're clearly not considering the bigger picture- mobile devices, visually impaired users requiring the font made large are two examples that spring immediately to mind.
None of that gives any reason why there should be a space in this string of ten characters and not in longer (standard) single words.
quote: The fwfr is probably the last place on the internet you would expect adherance to correct grammar and it's long violated a lot worse bastardizations than spaces after slashes.
Spacing isn't anything to do with grammar.
Those distortions which take place here occur because of the word limit. These erroneous spaces don't have anything to do with that. (And I also don't agree that the other distortions are 'worse'.)
quote: There most certainly have been incidences of me reformatting long words to fit the format- Mary Poppins being the most apparent. I may not use spaces, but I do use hyphens.
I was talking about the far greater number of normal non-compound words.
quote: Finally, whilst it may not be legal to murder people in your own house just because you put up a sign, you have to admit anyone who then went in anyway and complained they were being attacked with a knife only has themselves to blame.
That doesn't make any sense. Murder victims are no more to blame just because the murderer warned them.
This debate is so stupid, it's actually very funny. |
