| Ever noticed the new "Play" button alongside some movies in your Netflix queue? Last night, I tried their Watch Instantly service on a docu called GIULIANI TIME. It was gorgeous, the [mostly videotaped] images sharp and clear, even in full screen mode. There was only one slight interruption over two hours, a quick skip like the macro blocking on a hi-def station. I could pause, skip forward or backward. It's nothing you would want to use to see a big blockbuster, but for a docu or indie, it's fantastic! |

| What was the thrust of the film - was he good for NYC? Is he an ego-maniac? As a New Yorker - what is your opinion of the man? |

It was a view through his career as a "crime-stopping" prosecutor and mayor. That was the only part of Rudy which the film examined. Note the quotes, and believe me, all New Yorkers were ready to pitch him into the ash heap until one thing happened that saved both him and the sorry chief executive that happened to be reading MY PET GOAT at the time:
9/11.
The upcoming election? Rudy Giuliani was the only guy on either Presidential side who actually scared me. Now that he's gone, I feel much better about the three serious candidates left. The only real reason to pick one side over the other can be expressed in two words:
Supreme Court. |

I don't really know much about Rudy, but I've used the Netflix instant thing (have to use IE, I think, not my beloved Opera) to watch a movie that they don't have available for rental - Stop Making Sense, by the Talking Heads.
Awesome concert flick, looked pretty good on my computer, and no problems with the service. I plan to watch some TV shows and such when I get time. |

| Me too. That's all I was trying to say. It's a great service for certain films, so give it a try, Netflickers. [No extra charge over what you're paying right now.] |

I actually use the 'watch instantly' feature on my Netflix account quite often. Currently, I use it to view those flicks I wouldn't normally bump to the top of my queue, yet are viewable, as I attempt to drift off to sleep(ex. 'Undead or Alive' 'Civic Duty' etc).
The films I won't view in this fashion, however, are foreign flicks, as I find they usually deserve/require my full attention.
I relish this feature, 'cuz it gives me options between Netflix home deliveries.
Nice post Randall. |

Now I've seen a few more. I think the sweet spot right now is <:90 documentaries. The one on "outsider artist" Henry Darger, IN THE REALMS OF THE UNREAL, was sublime.
[I saw the director's following film, PROTAGONIST, at Sundance 07. It's just as gorgeous, and I'll bet you'll be able to play it on Netflix when it finally appears for home viewing.] |
