Looking over the list of winners and nominees in the editing category, I have to wonder why comedy is so underrepresented at the Academy Awards.

To me, comedy is the movie genre most dependent on the skill of the editor. I would guess that editing a comedy is one of the trickiest assignments in Hollywood. So why aren't comedy editors being recognized?

Your thoughts...?

Absolutely! I think its a combination of the fact that action movies often require more coverage, which leads to more interesting editing choices, than do most comedies. The Bourne Ultimatum had material that allowed it to take more chances than something like Juno or Walk Hard, both of which were edited very well. However, this doesn't explain why certain comedies that take a lot of chances, are action-packed, and are still hilariously funny don't get nominated. A film like Shaun of the Dead is at least as deserving of an Oscar for editing as The Bourne Ultimatum.

I think the Academy doesn't see comedies as 'serious' films, so they aren't likely to be considered. It's probably the same for horror and to a much lesser extent, fantasy. I don't think they'd want to give a zombie movie a nomination for anything.

But I agree that editing of comedies would be of utmost importance.
