I havent been to a cinema for almost a year , catching them on DVD instead.
Reasons? I just wasn't prepared to put up with the generally selfish nature of cinema crowds who either acted like they were in their own house , at a party or in an all-u-can eat Buffet. The film seemed almost incidental to many of the audience who preferred to catch up with the latest news. I wouldn't consider myself anti-social and have no problems with loud Bars or Sports Bars or anywhere people gather to eat, drink and talk. Its just that i want to watch the film without 101 Distractions.
Plus it's gotten really expensive - at least 3 x a rental fee from the DVD shop ( plus i really like the cute Girl at the DVD shop who actally giggles at my Kevin Smith references )

I watch a lot on DVD (probably 10 to 1 over the cinema) but sometimes I just want to see them on the big screen.
I try and go to matinees instead of the super-crowded opening night or evening showings.
Just returned from Speed Racer; while I doubt it will thrill everyone, I was very excited to see it in digital projection on the big screen. Quite the ride. |

I watch about 2/year at the cinema, and about 250/year at home, for all the above reasons. The ones I see at the cinema are the big-screen blockbusters that I know are gonna be noisy enough to drown out the most annoying talkers, and that really benefit from a huge screen.
BTW I use the Kiwi equivalent of netflix and it's about 1/10th the price of the cinema. |

I haven't been to a movie theater in 1 1/2 years, partly because of work and studies, and largely because of the same reasons mentioned here.
And another reason is that Denver has a pretty good library system. They order all the new DVD releases, including lesser-known films, and patrons can place holds on them. I may have to wait a couple weeks after DVDs are released to watch them, but I think it's worth the wait.

| I personally believe that all movies are better seen in a crowd on a gigantic screen. I think the crowd are as an essential part of the moviegoing experience as popcorn and soda. I find them far less distracting than the multitude of bullshit I have around my house -- books, the Internet, TV. I'm too undisciplined of a movie watcher to see a movie all at once in one sitting -- a theater forces me to, and I appreciate the help. |

| I'd go more often but we just don't have the time, and when one person does, the other doesn't. We'd go on our own, but we usually want to see the same films. |

| I have to agree with Mr.B.I. I like the experience of the big screen and other people being there. Like him, watching a D.V.D. I would just get distracted and pause it. I can watch T.V. series on D.V.D., but I think that's because I can do something else while watching them, whereas with films I feel as though I should be paying attention. I'd also rather go into the centre of town than just stay in my flat. I don't find it hard to tune the background noise out. If people are talking right in front of me, then I don't let them get away with it, so that's not a problem either. Last year, I saw two hundred and fifty-something at the cinema. Because of LoveFilm, I probably saw a few tens on D.V.D., but as I'm not a member now I've probably seen one this year (Sideways) on D.V.D. against over a hundred at the cinema. |

| I only go to the cinema when (1) the flick's made a mark on the culture and it's still loud enough that the idiots talking don't bother me -- we saw IRON MAN yesterday at 10a; or (2) it's quiet enough that those selfsame idiots simply won't be there [FSLC/NYFF/Sundance screenings]. Otherwise, it's DVD, baby. Sue me -- but nobody talks! |

Every time I go to the cinema I vow never to return again because of loud whisperers, chair-kickers and popcorn-eating lip-smackers incapable of keeping their mouths shut whilst chewing, but somehow I always get suckered into going again.
Sadly, I've yet to find a film and cinema combination that can successfully drown out the sound of someone yammering away one row behind me and I've certainly yet to find a cinema that has an experience capable of distracting me from getting a foot to the back of my head (which has happened more than once now- and this was *before* I shushed them).
Never again.
Well, okay- I'll go see Indy IV, but that's it. Probably. |

I wanna see Hancock, the rest this year (even Indy) I could let slide. But with kids at home, odds are we'll see at least one other, and more likely six or more before the year is out.
I'm guessing Wall-E, Harry Potter, and Narnia they will want to see. Maybe Kung Fu Panda.

Here are some tips:
(1) I know you like to sit at the front, but, at least in places with stadium seating, have you tried sitting at the back?
(2) Be unemployed. It's very convenient because one can then go in the daytime. |

Despite my aversion to the physical torture of the cinema, I'm sure I will be there at INDY 4, BATMAN WHATEVER, and maybe even GET SMART, if I can coax Ms. Randall there too.
I will be skipping THE NEW HULK, THE NEW ADAM SANDLER, THE NEW MIKE MYERS, THE NEW X-FILES, and even THE NEW WILL FERRELL. The interminable trailers preceding IRON MAN de-sold us on all but the X-Files -- because there wasn't a trailer for that one. [Clever Fox!]
I am instead waiting for the triumphant entrance of Steve Coogan and HAMLET 2 in August. Oh, hold it: I already saw that film in January! Enjoy the final summer sorbet that is going to rock your sexy Jesuses, my little fwiffers. Enjoy. Enjoy. |

| The big blockbusters are the ones where the audience is most annoying -- because a large proportion of it goes to the cinema infrequently. I think I'll try to see that one in the daytime on the first day. |
