"PLZ GET MILK, KTHXBYE"

You're making your movie, and there's a scene in it where your hero gets attacked by street thugs. Your hero is white (obviously -- what other color would he be, right?) What color are the thugs?

1. They're black.
Why, you... you RACIST! I am appalled! Peddle your white power fantasies elsewhere, bigot. You won't find many scenes like this in the movies precisely for fear of racism labels. The only ones I can think of off-hand are things like American History X, where it's meant to be a commentary on racism. (This doesn't stop American History X from being incredibly racist, I'd like to point out.)

2. They're white.
Oh, you pathetic PC pansy. Your cowardice disgusts me. Sure, WHITE street thugs. Who are you trying to kid here? And furthermore, we aren't fooled by your sad attempts to bandaid over your prejudices. Increasingly though, this is the option that filmmakers will take, precisely because they don't want to play into any racist fantasies. You'll see great films like Collateral or even Taxi Driver have white guys kill white guys.

3. They're Latino.
Same problems as making them black, but for some reason people don't throw too much of a fit about this one. It still strikes a weird note, though, especially in Bruce Almighty which certainly didn't need that racial tension in it. As a plus, as in the case of The Brave One, you can use them without being politically correct, but you can also make them light-skinned enough that they can pass for white in promotional photos and not preemptively offend anyone.

4. They're a mixture of different races.
This is worse than making them white, in my opinion. Gangs are almost always completely racially homogenous, but in movies they'll frequently look like a Benetton ad. This goes for the Rainbow Coalition gang in Death Sentence as much as the pseudo-alQaeda in Iron Man which goes out of its way to affirm that the terrorists have no shared religion or even racial characteristics.

5. They're the droogs from A Clockwork Orange.
This is what the Tenacious D movie did. Brilliant, I say.

Could they not be a squad of humanoid death-bots sent by the faceless evil corporation?

Even better! Whatever race you make the fembots doesn't matter- the women in the audience will dig the strong female role models and the guys will be too distracted to care who's what race

Oh come on...when I watch Death Wish 3, it warms my heart to see whites, blacks, Asians, and Latinos all killing and raping together in racial harmony.

I'm sorry, but as nice as that vision is, we still have a long way to go before we reach that level of racial harmony, which is why I can't regard Death Wish 3 as anything but a utopian fairy tale.

It's okay to make them black or Latino so long as their victims are the same.

I love how all street toughs with the merest hint of a far eastern background all zip about like Mister Miyagi on speed! It's "well known" that ALL asian people are masters of the martial arts. This means if the caucasian hero gets attacked by an asian gang of 20, 19 will sportingly dancearound in a ring while the other goes mano a mano ( oops mixing my ethnicity there ! )with the hero.

Of course , as we all know from Woo flicks the asian gangs are famous " Bullet Hosers" when they pick up the Gun. Long lasting magazines ensure plentiful richochets and near misses - protocol dictates that the first few shots are " near misses " to signal the start of the fight, Then it's all hands to the pump as 9mm mayhem ensues! ZHAO ZI YANG!!!
