This is awful news. I'm not very familiar with his work as a director, although I have seen and quite enjoyed Three Days of the Condor and The Firm, but he was also a phenomenal actor. This is a loss.

Sydney's down under

When Tootsie came out, I remember some brainless bimbo of an entertainment reporter saying on CBC television that Sydney Pollack had done an excellent job directing the film and she would have to start thinking of him as a director instead of an actor. Given that the guy had already won an Oscar for Out Of Africa, I wondered what the hell she was talking about. It finally dawned on me that she had confused Sydney Pollack with Sidney Portier! The resemblance is obvious!

Got your chronology a little wrong there. The point stands though.

Wow! Memory's a weird thing. I could have sworn OOA came first. So which film was being reviewed?

Could still have been Tootsie. Pollack was a pretty established director by that point.
