Pineapple Express

On the surface - nothing is right with this film.

Director David Gordon Green is on the record as loving big action movies. And, unlikely as the premise might suggest it to be, that's exactly what he stuffs in with a few precision set pieces.

OK maybe they [like the film itself] go on too long, but they're supposed to do punctuation duty to shake you up in case you're as stoned as the two protagonists - Seth Rogan, reprising his 20-something notch-above-nerd, and James Franco, the gentle guy with a deft comic line in understatement.

Apart from Franco's feisty 'alte bubby' and even feistier cop Cleo King, the film is heavily and needlessly male-dominated. Both Seth's high-school girlfriend and corrupt cop Rosie Perez are poorly written and under-used.

It's the film's opening that clues you in that this isn't just another mindless stoner-boner - though you will find plenty of that here. It's a beautiful black and white retro recreation of how the military Stamped Out In Anger any sanctioning of getting high because smoking weed removed a soldier's inhibitions and divested him of a sense of duty and respect for authority.

And, so, the hippy generation was born. And it spawned Judd Apatow!

OK - confession time. Yes, I was a hippy. But, no, I never did drugs. That, I suppose, was my rebellion. But please don't sweep me up along with those prudes and dudes who want us to just say no.

In fact I'm in favour of legalizing all drugs, which I honestly believe would do away with a big slice of crime all over the world. Of course it would mean lotsa corrupt officials and government types and military bagmen and mobsters would all be threatened by black holes in their bank accounts, but you know - nothing else makes any sense.

And that, my friends, is what I believe this film is really about. At one point Seth says "Everybody smokes weed." And even if it isn't strictly true - it represents, dude!

It's still Rogen.

He's somehow just likeable, like Jack Black but more so. And as someone notes in the film, he suddenly becomes almost good-looking when he has glasses on.

So, I liked the film. However, I didn't really think about the drug issues you rightly mention. We need a Syriana/Babel-type film about the whole supply chain, documenting the human misery alongside stories of people not thinking there was any harm. I've got some sympathy for people's whose life conditions lead them to addiction, but far more for those in Colombia etc. It's strange how many people buy all organic local food and make sure their clothing is fair trade, but merrily consume drugs from any old source.

As an aside, I live in Brixton, where the drug dealers are extremely obvious to everybody (outside K.F.C., not that far from the police station). A few weeks ago, I had accidentally left my wallet in the Prince Charles Cinema (whose 'thorough check' of the spot I precisely described and one week's general cleaning failed to recover it before I found it myself within seconds, in the dark, when I went back) so had to walk home. After I politely (honestly) declined a drug dealer's offer, he grabbed my arm and offered again -- I mean literally grabbed my upper arm, though not violently or intimidatingly. Very strange.

I thought the movie was cooooooooool man.

That guy you know the funny one from that movie about the old virgin guy, he's really funny.

The bit in the forest made me laugh so much man that I spilled my coke into my popcorn and the i dropped it and my mobile fell out of my pocket and i dropped my keys and I missed the next bit cause the guy from the cimema came over and told me to stop making so much noise but i wasn't really paying attention cause of the cute chick sitting behind where he was standing and she was wearing this really tight top and you could see that she wasn't wearimg a bra and then the guy asked me had I been listening to him and I told him he was freaking me out....

and....

and...

what was I talking about?

Oh yeah the Pineapple Limited movie...go and see it man it's coooooool.

First hour: mildly amusing. Especially Franco.

Second hour: wtf?

Two stars. Leave this stuff to the pros, Cheech & Chong.

I was having a lively discussion with the guy at the DVD shop about this film ( or so I thought ). He was going on about knockabout comedy and i was going on about "artsy" comedy. I was further surprised to find the name Seth Rogan was involved. Turns out I had been talking about" The Darjeeling Limited ".

No wonder he looked confused!
