How to Lose Friends & Alienate People

Based on the Spectator reporter Toby Young's experiences of his disasterous short-lived NYC journo career, Robert B Weide's film treatment tries to force a slice-of-life account into the too-small glass slipper of a rom-com. It's not all bad, and Simon Pegg's portrait sometimes allows us into a man who recognizes the inanities of his pursuit of literary fame in a world of shallow celebrity.

I suppose if you're au fait with the glitterati of NY's magazine and mogul culture, you'll be able to play spot the editor or p.r. vampire. We can all play spot the real celebs who agreed to cameo in the several set piece party scenes. And I even spotted producer Stephen Woolley in the queue at the LA Airport - yippee, points for me!!

So the rom bit is supplied by Kirsten Dunst, showing us the nice wholesome mid-West gal she is - brainy and not too beautiful to deviate from her literary ambitions, but insecure enough to be diverted by some ruthless male manipulation in the form of Danny Houston. He's really developing a lovely line in urban villainry. Pegg plays an intelligent and cultured man wearing an invisible idiot suit for much of the time. He and Kirsten meet cute in a bar, part as enemies, meet not-so-cute when he finds she's his immediate boss and evolve into a friendship that has only one outcome if you've ever seen another film in your life.

Various people are fine with some silly material, including Young's big honcho boss Jeff Bridges - who deserves a DECENT part already, someone - Gillian Anderson, as a glamorous Lady Macbeth pr creature, Miriam Margolyes as Pegg's Slavic landlady, the wonderful Bill Paterson as his dad. And, it must be said, Megan Fox as the fanatsy-fuck who diverts Pegg from his destiny.

As for the com bit of rom-com -- there wasn't much. And some of it was courtesy of a little piggy. As I always say, you can't miss with a pig
