I was watching " Brannigan " recently. You know , it's the one where an ageing and portly John Wayne ambles around London in the 70's. However before all that malarkey he finds a counterfeiter in Chicago. The counterfeiter is at work in the abandoned warehouse when.....I get a sense of Deja Vu! John Wayne kicks the door so hard it comes off the hinges ( a- hem! ) then quips " Knock Knock ".
Yeah and when Arnie did it in " Predator " I thought it was an original Arnie-ism!
Anyway, the point of the thread is ...have you had a similar moment or else watched a film and thought " I've seen that before! " ( eg The "Odessa Step" sequence in Untouchables ) |

| I thought that 50 First Dates had an original twist to it, with waking up every day not remembering anything, but then I see this was used in Clean Slate. |

| Every movie in the last 65 years and Casablanca - watching that movie almost makes it seem as if it is a bit hackneyed because so many films have borrowed from it, but I think a lot of it was original at the time. |

I thought one of the most powerful images in Saving Private Ryan was the soldier on the beach in Normandy, walking around looking for something ... then he picks up his arm that had been blown off with his one good hand.
Then I was watching Ran -- same thing in that flick's battle scene.
Speilberg stole the shot from Akira Kurosawa! |

What a great film Ran is, I watched a heap of Akira films last year, excellent viewing.

Watch YOJIMBO and then Sergio Leone's remake, A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS. Or THE HIDDEN FORTRESS and then STAR WARS. You'll see shot steals, called -- in the then trendy Cahiers du Cinema style -- "homages." |
