I hope I'm not sharing too soon ... but I seem to have fixed my puter freeze, so this is for anyone else using Comodo.

Comodo is a great FREE firewall, which I've been using for several years. You can read all about it here or any firewall evaluation site.

HOWEVER

Apparently in searching for updates it occasionally develops a coding glitch and keeps looping around itself, highjacking more and more of the system's resources until it gloms 99 or even 100%. By that time your puter is running slower than an Amstrad DOS greenscreen trying to download a 10Kb file. Which is REALLY SLOW!

Then everything freezes and you can't even get into fwfr or anywhere!

So - here's what to do. It took me nearly two days to figure it out, but it should only take you about 15 minutes or less!!

Download a new version of Comodo and make sure you know where it downloads to [it's usually in Doc & Settings/downloads]

Then, turn off your puter and unplug your internet connection.

Then, uninstall your existing copy of Comodo, and install your newly downloaded copy.

Then turn off your puter, and reconnect yourself to the internet.

Then turn on your puter, and it should be working okay. If not, do a deep virus scan offline, and try it all again.

That wouldn't be the first time an app has done that. I keep Task Manager permanently running (on Windows) so when that problem arises it's immediately obvious what's happening. Also, it allows me to terminate the offending process and get control of the PC again.

The last time I had that problem it was Windows Updates doing it on boot (a couple of years ago). The problem eventually 'disappeared' and everything's been fine since.

Very true ... except for some reason known only to Comodorians, trying to End Process on cmdagent.exe [the offending file] only brings up an Access Denied message.

But thanks, anyway. BTW - and given my atrocious geography - I hope you weren't affected by the unseasonal snowstorm. Keep warm, Sean!
