I was a little kid in my mother's house. Mom had a home business, dressmaking. She was fitting a customer when the news about the assassination came on the radio. Mom and her customer asked me to turn up the volume so they could hear it better.
My parents were Roosevelt Democrats (still are) and adored JFK. Of course then, very few people knew about JFK's sexual appetite, and how shabbily he treated women.
My admiration is for the former First Lady, Jackie. Somehow, despite the turbulent events of her life, and despite the fantastic wealth she enjoyed, and despite the paparazzi, she apparently managed to do a fine job of rearing her children. |

I was in 1st grade when it happened. I remember my teacher had one of those old fashioned radios that would screech when you changed stations. She turned it on to hear the news and made us all put our heads down on our desks.
We watched the funeral on TV at home. To think that little boy who saluted the casket as it went by is also dead, is even more difficult. |

I wasn't quite around then but My parents were living in New York and my Mother gave birth to my Eldest briother on the day, she remembers Doctors and Nurses crying at the breaking news. |

I had been kicked out of University for low grades and was working at the local Bowling Alley for two semesters before they would let me back in. The TV was on in the bar and, one by one, the bowlers were gathering there to watch TV. I had no idea what was going on until one of the bowlers, with tears in her eyes, told me. That night, it was interesting to see the bowlers, mostly large burly men, arrive for league bowling with red eyes from crying. |

I was a senior in high school, writing a first term English exam, when the principal announced the shooting over the P.A.
I remember thinking "There goes Vaughn Meader's career". |

| I was very young. All the kids were released from school and as they walked down the sidewalk, many were crying, although I'm not sure they all understood why they were crying. I can remember my mother pulling the black and white television to the doorway of our little dining room so she and my dad could watch the TV coverage during dinner. I was fairly upset because they were upset and I didn't want to eat, much less the chop suey she had fixed. (Whenever I remember things like that, I'm overwhelmed with missing my mother and feeling guilty about silly childhood behaviors like that.) We watched the coverage, including the funeral, never venturing far from the TV. I can vividly recall being at what must have been the Thanksgiving pitch-in at church on Sunday and the men coming in to say that Oswald had been shot and killed. How odd it is - that is the earliest memory I have of being at that church. Later, one of my mother's friends gave her a copy of The Torch Is Passed as a gift. I cherished that book and read it many times. It is one of the important keepsakes I have from my mother's possessions, although I realize a lot of those were published, it has my mother's handwriting inside. |
