I just received my latest piece of spam, yet another crude attempt at the notorious "419 scam," where the sender poses as royalty controlling a fortune that you can have if you'll just do a teensy favor. This one's "Nigerian" and goes by the above name, sic sic sic.
What's worse about this particular one is that it came through the fwfr mail system, implying either that the sender is a registered fwiffer or there is a security leak.
Did anyone else get it? |

Oh no, that is so annoying. I didn't get it yet, but will let you know if I do.
I had such a hassle trying to sell a 'phone on eBay - frauds kept giving the winning bid.
I always wonder - who is it that actually falls for these scams and makes them worth doing? |

There were reports of a few people falling for similar scams. Quite sad, really.
Check out this site for some hilarious stories of scamming the scammers.

I assume that it includes the P-P-P-Powerbook - anyone who hasn't read about that should make sure to do so.

My favorite 419 prank is this one. It helps if you're familiar with the work of H. P. Lovecraft, but even if you aren't [like the scammer], just know that he invented many creepy monsters, and enjoy! |

Yikes! I didn't get it. Make sure you let benj know so he can get rid of the account.
Perhaps you should PM them the link to "Chatterbox" or "Monsturd" and tell them to get reviewing. |

Miskatonic? Arkham? If only he used some Lovecraftian adjectives like noisome, too... Still, it's a great one. Thanks, Randall.
And thanks, Salopian; I had never heard of the P-P-P-Powerbook scam either, and it is also very funny.

His username is emman4u. He may be working down the top 100 list, or else he just read my reviews and judged me the most gullible fwiffer around... |

In a nice bit of serendipity, I opened my copy of the June issue of ATLANTIC MONTHLY to find a nice piece by Ron Rosenbaum about 419 scambaiters. He features this site, whose moderator, Mike Berry, claims to have "induced scammers to write out entire novels by hand, including the Lord of the Rings trilogy and most of the Harry Potter series." He also persuaded one chump to carve a Commodore 64 keyboard out of wood.
Rosenbaum's piece explores the moral issues raised by scambaiting, where "trophy rooms" hold photos of humiliating signs and gloating emails from baiters reveal not-very-covert touches of racism. In general, I think these predatory putzes deserve whatever they get, but Rosenbaum makes you think.
In the meantime, benj, can you please delete this geek's account? |
